Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
